segmented Corpus of Buddhist Sanskrit (proof of concept)
This is a proof-of-concept Sanskrit corpus developed for the study of Buddhist Sanskrit lexicolog... more This is a proof-of-concept Sanskrit corpus developed for the study of Buddhist Sanskrit lexicology. It comprises: 311 lemmatized and metadata-enriched Buddhist Sanskrit texts for a total of ~ 7 million words. a tokenised reference corpus of general Sanskrit including 267 texts for a total of ~ 13 million words a metadata table with information about each text in the Buddhist and Reference corpora The corpora is in romanised Sanskrit (UTF-8 encoding) <strong>Limitations</strong><br> As a proof of concept, this corpus suffers from several limitations. It is small by contemporary standards and it has <strong>not</strong> been <strong>proof-read</strong> yet. This is a proof-of-concept Sanskrit corpus developed for the study of Buddhist Sanskrit lexicolog... more This is a proof-of-concept Sanskrit corpus developed for the study of Buddhist Sanskrit lexicology. It comprises: 73 metadata-enriched Buddhist Sanskrit texts for a total of ~ 3 million tokens a 4 million tokens reference corpus comprising 30 metadata-enriched non-Buddhist Sanskrit texts. The corpus is in romanised Sanskrit (UTF-8 encoding) and is available in three configurations: segmented (with dash-separated words) segmented and stemmed (with capitalised word stem and compounds separated by an @ sign). segmented, stemmed and normalised (normalisation treats some spelling variation and solves sandhi of stems' initials in most cases), recommended for Word Sketches. The latter version can be used to generate word sketches in Sketch Engine if used in conjunction with the included sketch grammar, which infers likely syntactic dependencies from morphological cues. <strong>Limitations</strong><br> As a proof of concept, this corpus suffers from several limitations...

physischen, verbalen und mentalen Ebene ag... more Die Personen, die im Pāli Kanon auftreten und auf der
physischen, verbalen und mentalen Ebene agieren,
sind ein konstituierender Bestandteil der Struktur der
Suttas des Sutta Piṭaka. Dabei überrascht es etwas,
dass die Erforschung der Figuren des Pāli Kanons –
abgesehen vielleicht vom historischen Buddha
Śākyamuni selbst - ein eher vernachlässigtes
Forschungsfeld zu sein scheint. Der Schwerpunkt der
Forschung in der Buddhismuskunde lag und liegt,
verständlicherweise, eindeutig auf dem doktrinären
Inhalt des Sutta Piṭaka und weniger auf den
(strukturellen) Eigenschaften der Suttas als
literarischer Texte.
In meinem Vortrag möchte ich „work in progress“
vorstellen, d.h. einige wesentliche Aspekte und
Probleme des Themenkomplexes Figur und Person in
der literarischen Darstellung sowie Teilergebnisse
meines Promotionsprojektes präsentieren (und
diskutieren), das sich mit der Anwendbarkeit und dem
Mehrwert narratologischer Methoden auf vormoderne indische Texte, die Pāli-Suttas, beschäftigt.

Based on a conference held at Mangalam Research Center for Buddhist Languages, this collection of... more Based on a conference held at Mangalam Research Center for Buddhist Languages, this collection of essays explores the narrative strategies and uses of language employed by Buddhist sūtras to create imaginal worlds and invite the reader or listener to enter. Not content to read Buddhist texts solely for their doctrinal meaning, the authors of these papers focus on the ways in which the sūtras draw the audience into their worlds. The act of reading becomes a central focus for examining the way sūtras structure symbolic and ritual worlds. The essays in the book are presented in honor of the late Luis Gómez, who inspired a generation of young scholars to attend to the practice of reading Buddhist texts creatively and with appreciation.

This is my doctoral dissertation, written in 2012/2013, and published online on the server of the... more This is my doctoral dissertation, written in 2012/2013, and published online on the server of the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Bonn in 2016 (URN: urn:nbn:de:hbz:5-44254).
Unfortunately, the work suffers from its mendable "hybrid" English. It was originally written in England and Germany by a native speaker of German (thinking in the Pali language) following the conventions of British academic writing. Later it was revised in the United States by an American-English native-speaker who was burdened with the task of editing the work for publication. The dissertation is an attempt to apply narratological concepts to pre-modern non-European texts, the suttas of the Pali Canon, with the aim of better understanding the inner workings of some of these texts. The general approach is a 'synchronic' rather than 'diachronic' one. In particular, I analyze the narrative techniques applied by these texts to represent persons, and their perceived effects (on the ideal reader). With regard to the narratology of characters, I specifically draw on the work done by Uri Margolin, James Phelan, and Herbert Grabes. Within in the vast sea of narratology itself, Gérard Genette continually served as my beacon. A special focus of the dissertation is the analysis of the narrative technique called 'internal focalization' by Genette, which is much more a determining features of these ancient texts than one would expect.
